With all the busyness of back-to-school and back-to-routines, it’s easy to slip back into some unhealthy habits. We end up running to and from practices and meetings, stopping for fast food here and there. We rely on caffeine to make it through our busy schedule before crashing on the couch in the evening, binge-watching our shows, while binge-eating junk. With the progression from Thanksgiving desserts right into Halloween candy, culminating in the Christmas season of over-eating, fall is the perfect time to take stock of your fitness habits.
It is really a good time of year to get moving outdoors. There is no oppressive heat or humidity. There is no windchill or snow (yet). There are no excuses! The sky is beautifully clear and crisp, and the colours of the leaves are breathtaking. Here are some great ways to get moving with your family this fall.
Make leaf-raking a family affair. Just one hour of yard work can burn up to 300 calories! Buy small plastic rakes for the younger ones so they can be a part of the process. While you’re at it, make a few giant piles to jump in! Have a leaf fight! Bury each other! You’re not only getting exercise, but you are creating great memories with your family!
Go for a hike as a family. Discover new trails or hit the family favourites! Learn how to do geocaching! Do a daily walk together after supper, and take the dog along! For an added incentive, challenge yourselves. How many kilometers can you walk during the month? Map it or graph it (chances are your children are already doing this in math, and doing it at home will create all sorts of great home and school connections).
Fall is known as the beginning of football season. Rather than just watching, why not get up and play a game of it with your family or friends! Have you ever tried mud football in the rain? So much fun! Whatever your skill level, it’s a fun group activity, good for lots of laughs! Or grab the soccer ball, and get a few games in before the snow flies!
If you don’t have time to carve out for fitness, try building it into your day. Park further away! Take a quick walk at lunch! Take the stairs! Walk a few laps while your kids are at practice! Every little bit helps.
It doesn’t really matter what you do, as long as you do something to get moving! Be sure to check out Tradyo’s Sporting Goods and Exercise category for all your fitness needs.
